I was prompted to create the thread because of the traffic chaos in inner Sydney which has followed the opening of the Rozelle Interchange. At first bad signage was blamed, then too many construction trucks going to and from other projects. This morning in the Sydney Morning Herald it's emerging that the problems are actually about the planning.
This is part of Australia's biggest infrastructure project, it's been controversial from the start, and it's all about MORE CARS! None of it should ever have been built, all the resources should have gone to public transport, cycle ways, urban accessibility, decentralisation etc.. Sydney is a car-plagued hellscape.
https://www.smh.com.au/national/nsw/how ... 5ensa.htmlIt has left packed buses, which once offered commuters a quicker ride into the CBD, crawling along local roads as they get caught up in the congestion, turning what was once a 15-minute trip from Balmain to the CBD into a 45-minute journey.
Roads Minister John Graham and senior transport officials have a major problem on their hands.
Residents who have endured years of disruption from construction of the interchange will not tolerate weeks and months of this, let alone wait for relief to congested roads from the opening of the Western Harbour Tunnel in 2028.
The minister offered few tangible remedies on Wednesday. A directive for trucks working on government construction sites at Rozelle to stay off the City West Link during the morning peak won’t be the magical solution.
