The War on Cars

Post by stylofone »

The best car is no car... or it would be for me if I lived closer to public transport and better footpaths.

I was prompted to create the thread because of the traffic chaos in inner Sydney which has followed the opening of the Rozelle Interchange. At first bad signage was blamed, then too many construction trucks going to and from other projects. This morning in the Sydney Morning Herald it's emerging that the problems are actually about the planning.

This is part of Australia's biggest infrastructure project, it's been controversial from the start, and it's all about MORE CARS! None of it should ever have been built, all the resources should have gone to public transport, cycle ways, urban accessibility, decentralisation etc.. Sydney is a car-plagued hellscape.
It has left packed buses, which once offered commuters a quicker ride into the CBD, crawling along local roads as they get caught up in the congestion, turning what was once a 15-minute trip from Balmain to the CBD into a 45-minute journey.

Roads Minister John Graham and senior transport officials have a major problem on their hands.

Residents who have endured years of disruption from construction of the interchange will not tolerate weeks and months of this, let alone wait for relief to congested roads from the opening of the Western Harbour Tunnel in 2028.

The minister offered few tangible remedies on Wednesday. A directive for trucks working on government construction sites at Rozelle to stay off the City West Link during the morning peak won’t be the magical solution.

In the UK, the car lovers are getting proactively nasty.
A blast that damaged an Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) camera and nearby vehicles in southeast London was caused by an improvised explosive device, the Metropolitan Police believes.

The camera was struck in Sidcup on Wednesday evening just hours after it had been installed.

Counter Terrorism Command officers, including explosives experts, are leading the criminal investigation but the incident is not currently being treated as terrorism.

Police believe it was a deliberate act and was carried out using a "low-sophistication" IED.

Officers said the camera had been cut down at around 5.15pm and members of the public reported the explosion in Willersley Avenue around 90 minutes later at 6.45pm.
