It is not being axed.
Was there an announcement?
I don't do twitter and don't know how to link it but elon responded to the claim, though in typical weird fashion, by saying the reuters article was lying. So I guess it could be ambiguous what he was talking about. There have been no announcements from Tesla about abandoning it and recent comments from Elon and others about it still happening.

So in conclusion, who knows?! It would be a big mistake if they did cancel it, especially after pushing ahead on cybertruck.

One of the articles I saw said the "Robotaxi" would be the same platform as the "Model 2", which made me think the latter could be kept alive indefinitely, they could say they haven't axed it even if in practice it is on ice.

Tesla's share price (more than the other major car companies combined) is all about the future. With the rise of the Chinese EV behemoths, especially BYD, it looks like the present has caught up. "Robotaxis" allow Musk to sell the future again. I don't believe it.
I can feel it

I'm not on first-name terms with that Musk chap, but I can cite things.
A mass-market, low-cost electric family car has long been touted as the holy grail of EVs with the potential to be as transformative to society as the Ford Model T was in the early 20th century. Elon Musk promised to deliver this dream, but those plans have seemingly been put on the back burner. Reuters reported on Friday that Tesla has thrown out plans for the long-rumored $25,000 Model 2. However, Musk has refuted the report on Twitter despite the news agency citing Tesla employees as direct sources.

While Musk told investors this year that the elusive Model 2 would enter production in 2025, the low-cost model was purportedly canned in February. Reuters reported:
Two sources said they learned of Tesla’s decision to scrap the Model 2 in a meeting attended by scores of employees, with one of them saying the gathering happened in late February.

“Elon’s directive is to go all in on robotaxi,” that person said.

The third source confirmed the cancellation and said new plans call for robotaxis to be produced, but in much lower volumes than had been projected for the Model 2.
Musk took to Twitter to denounce the report as a lie and remark that Reuters was dying. While I would understand if the automaker’s enigmatic CEO shifted his vision of what the future looks like, it seems like certain people were meant to be kept in the dark about the Model 2’s shelving. Reuters noted that messages were sent to employees on March 1 stating “suppliers should halt all further activities related to H422/NV91,” with some engineers already getting reassigned. H422 and NV91 are Tesla’s codenames for the low-cost model program. Telling employees and suppliers one thing while sending a different message to the public is a recipe for chaos.

Perhaps one of Musk's inner circle can categorically deny this piece of evildoing.

This from a few weeks ago. Thought it worthwhile noting it here.

(Also, a neat little poll there that says something about that dead bird site).

Apparently "an all-time high" looks like a graph with a pronounced dip from left to right.

Things you mustn't do in a Muskmobile: number 56432 in a continuing series.

I'll let somebody else supply euphemisms or excuses. Let's just say that Company That Puts Together Leccy Cars (Sometimes Doing It Better Than Other Times) is preparing to give 10% of its workforce New Opportunities In Employment.

Well, if you asked me i'd say 14,000 workers have a marvelous opportunity to reassess the well-being potential of ethical employment. Luckily they won't ask me, because of course this is traumatic for those 14,000 people and I acknowledge that. But really, who would choose to work for this fuckwit: a fascist, narcissistic, fantasist grifting naked emperor? Pretty much a malignant tumor on a dying planet, you work for that? And now you've lost your job? All that comes to mind is...congratulations.

Can't put a good spin on this.
Elon Musk’s X is a thriving hub for Nazi support and propaganda, with paid subscribers sharing speeches by Adolf Hitler or content praising his genocidal regime.

NBC News found that at least 150 paid “Premium” subscriber X accounts and thousands of unpaid accounts have posted or amplified pro-Nazi content on X in recent months, often in apparent violation of X’s rules. The paid accounts posting the content all consistently posted antisemitic or pro-Nazi material. Examples included praise of Nazi soldiers, sharing of Nazi symbols and denials of the Holocaust.

The pro-Nazi content is not confined to the fringes of the platform. During one seven-day period in March, seven of the most widely shared pro-Nazi posts on X accrued 4.5 million views in total. One post with 1.9 million views promoted a false and long-debunked conspiracy theory that 6 million Jews did not die in the Holocaust. More than 5,300 verified and unverified accounts reshared that post, and other popular posts were reshared hundreds of times apiece.
