While well meaning, he really has no idea what drove these youths to crime, and that's what needs to be addressed, these are just band aids applied after the fact. While this approach may work with some youths depending on their circumstances it's by no means a universal panacea! it's just a continuation of the "the solution to crime is punishment" thought process of conservative ideology. The solution to youth crime is to find out what is driving youth crime, and address that!“They don’t get put into a youth detention centre, they get put onto a facility such as a farm where they get up, they work hard, they go to bed at night, having also had access to educational opportunities. But they go to bed tired, mentally and physically.”
Taking the advice of untrained and inexperienced people over that of experts has always been useful for ideological thinking, because it's easy to find someone who agrees with you.
