LGBTQIA+ Rights Watch

Post by Irrev-Black »

Those pricks have translated Groucho's "I'm Against It" song into Russian, haven't they?

The Russian justice ministry on Friday said it had filed a lawsuit with the supreme court to outlaw what it called an “international LGBT public movement” as extremist, in the latest attacks against the country’s already suppressed LGBTQ+ community.

The ministry said in an online statement that authorities had determined “signs and manifestations of extremist nature” in “the activities of the LGBT movement” in Russia, including “incitement of social and religious discord”.

The ministry did not clarify what it meant under the “international LGBT public movement” or how the designation would apply. Russia’s supreme court is expected to consider the lawsuit later this month.

The Kremlin has previously used the extremist label to prosecute human rights groups, independent media and political opposition, including allies of the Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, some of whom have received lengthy jail sentences.

About time.
Gender-affirming procedures such as chest surgery and genital reconfiguration would be subsidised by Medicare under a push to improve mental health and quality of life for transgender people.

The federal health department will consider an application from the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons that seeks to establish 21 Medicare items for gender-affirming surgeries for people who have gender incongruence, in which a person’s experience of gender does not align with how they were born.

QLD faither school chooses to regret at leisure.

What's actually changed here? Any real progress?
Citipointe Christian College has issued an "expression of regret" two years after asking parents to sign a new enrolment contract stating that homosexuality is "sinful".

The contract was withdrawn in February 2022 after community backlash, and the school's principal Pastor Brian Mulheran resigned after the controversy grew.

The college acknowledged on Sunday that statements in the contract "were distressing to members and allies of the LGBTIQA+ community".

"We regret any distress or concern which was caused to students, parents and guardian of students or prospective students of the College, which includes those within the College community that are members of the LGBTIQA+ community, and their families and their allies," a statement on the college website said.

The statement was a result of a mediation between Christian Outreach Centre, which runs the school, and parents who referred it to Queensland Human Rights Commission.

The settlement appears to be a comprehensive win for parents, some of whom withdrew their children from the school to protest against its treatment of LGBTIQA+ students.

In a joint statement, the parents said they were happy with the result.

"We are hoping as a result of the settlement that a situation such as the enrolment contract will not happen again at the College or any other faith-based school," the statement said.

Meanwhile, in Pakistan.
A Pakistani man who tried to set up the country’s first gay club has been detained in a mental hospital by local authorities.

The man, who chose not to give his identity in an interview, had filed an application to set up the club in Abbottabad, the conservative northern city where Osama bin Laden was found and killed.

In the application filed to the deputy commissioner (DC) of the city, the man said the club was to be a “great convenience and resource for many homosexual, bisexual and even some heterosexual people residing in Abbottabad in particular, and in other parts of the country in general.”

Gay sex is illegal in Pakistan and can be punished by two years up to life in prison. The conservative religious culture also makes it difficult to be openly homosexual, although in practice the laws are rarely applied.

Displays of affection are also frowned upon among heterosexual couples, with fornication before marriage a crime.

The application stated that in “the envisaged gay club, tentatively to be called Lorenzo gay club, there would be no gay (or non-gay) sex (other than kissing).”

“A clearly visible notice on the wall would warn: no sex on premises. This would mean that no legal constraints (even obsolete ones like [anti-sodomy] PPC section 377) would be flouted on the premises”.

Abbottabad’s DC office confirmed it had received the application for a gay club and was reviewing it like any other proposal.

However, the application was leaked on social media, prompting fury from locals and politicians in the northern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where women face limits on their ability to access education and on socialising outside their homes.

Naseer Khan Nazir, a leader of the right-wing Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PATY), said that if permission for the club was granted, there would be “very severe consequences”.

Another MP from the party said that he would douse the building with petrol and set it on fire.
