Sortition: "Lotto" Elections

Post by Irrev-Black »

Though this article is American, I've seen it mooted for Australia before. Apart from the fact that extremely rich pricks can buy randomly-selected people too, I think the idea has merit.
Elections tend to favor candidates with narcissistic, Machiavellian, and psychopathic traits, who can be dangerous leaders. Any system that allows someone like George Santos, Marjorie Taylor Greene, or Ted Cruz to win is broken. A lottery would make it less likely for these types to gain power.

Lotteries would also give equal opportunity to all citizens regardless of status or wealth, eliminate gerrymandering and disputes over the Electoral College, and save money and reduce corruption.

In the past i have been cynical about sortition on the grounds that you might randomly select a bunch of One Nation types but how could they possibly be worse than career Laberal politicians? Or indeed...well, one nation? At this point, i'd be in favor of sortitioning both houses of parliament and be done with it. Perhaps we might get an MP that wasn't a capitalist! Imagine that.
