A sentence fragment can add drama and emphasis, but if it falls flat then it's confusing. It can also make the writer come across as a bit of a wanker.

Sometimes the smallest mistakes are the most annoying, because newspapers should be better than this. From the SMH.
The hilarious moment happened after the stranded swimming cap caused a delay in-between the preliminary heats in the 100m women’s breaststroke.
"Between" is a preposition and should be used here. "in-between" is the adjectival form.

And a headline from the Guardian
Albanese’s new lineup signposts Labor’s areas of greatest weakness and effectively concede he made mistakes
The subject is the sentence is "lineup", if the lineup "signposts", then it also "concedes".

Analysing these errors eases the annoyance.
