I find Australia is about 5 to 10 years behind the USA as well. The only thing saving us is compulsory voting and lower religious influence.
I'm amazed more people can't see the similarities with 1920's Germany.
I reckon preferential voting is hugely significant too. Less religious influence certainly helps, and what remains of Christianity here is mostly traditional, as in Anglican and Catholic, as opposed to America's cultural Frankenstein - Pentecostalism (although see Scummo).
But yeah, Australians aren't great at history it seems - frontier wars anyone? If we can't do history in our own backyards, we certainly can't apply it to movements in other cultures and places. History is substituted for mythology in fascist world views, so when a populace lives on the myths of colonisation it's easy to adopt other mythological narratives, i guess?

He has gone insane, he reckons when kids go to school the schools are performing gender rearrangement surgery and sending them home, this is one of the most insanely stupid things I have ever heard, they should be looking to institutionalise him, not elect him!

JD Vance admits to just making shit up because the actual facts don't support their agenda, if this isn't enough to get him kicked out of the GOP what will be. I mean seriously, would you trust a man who just admitted on live TV to making shit up to scare people to vote for him to be placed in the second most powerful position in the country, you would have to be fucking mad;

Ah Trump you're a fucking idiot:
“A deal could have been made. There wouldn’t have been one person who’d died. And there wouldn’t have been one golden tower laying shattered on its side,” Mr Trump said.
Does he know, or is it that he just doesn't care, that Putin's first move was to send in assassination squads to murder Zelensky and his family? That part of Putin's initial plan was for mass incarceration and probably the death of opponents of the takeover? Look there's no need to answer these, they are all true, he is an idiot, he cares for no-one except himself, he's a traitor who would have just given Putin whatever he asked for.

Well it appears he's scared and can't make up shit fast enough tp scare his dyed in the wool supporters because they are the only ones who will believe this, fortunately it does serve to push away the undecided:
“Joe Biden became mentally impaired. Kamala was born that way,” Mr Trump told his supporters during a rally in the swing state Wisconsin today.
“She was born that way. And if you think about it, only a mentally disabled person could have allowed this to happen to our country. Anybody would know this.”
Kamala: Graduated from university...yes. Trump...no.
Kamala: District Attorney...yes. Trump...no.
Kamala: Attorney General...yes. Trump...no.
Kamala: US Senator...yes. Trump...no.
Sounds like she's doing ok, Trump was elected President in extraordinary circumstances with the aid of external actors, Harris looks like she's going to be the next President. Trump has been an abject failure in business his entire life, a complete failure, is now a felon, has defrauded charities and individuals. It's bizarre he's even in with a chance, although that chance seems to be slipping away from him rapidly.

Reich finishes with some tentative optimism but i have to say that the good feelings i've had about Harris winning are starting to wane. The polling is just too close, and maga intimidation on election day is a real possibility and may have a proper impact. 30 odd days to go! Farrrrk.....

America is fucked, a surge of US asylum seekers would be a logical consequence of this madness.

Assuming Trump wins (at worst it's 50/50), we'll still have to wait and see what a second go at the office looks like. There are those that downplay the prospect of authoritarianism based on his previous term, which despite the chaos and the covid fuck ups, was largely business as usual. I feel as though he'll go full fascist if gets back in office but he might not, you never know. One thing though, if he wins i don't think it will take long to discern which way it's going.

Well yes, but the groups that will be the targets for maga/fascism will mostly not have the capacity to leave and no way allied countries are going to offer asylum status to US citizens. Maybe China will open its doors but that would be impractical to most, and probably unlikely anyway. Canada might offer some temporary sanctuary but that would be politically complicated for them. For most people there will be nowhere to run.
The wealthy might be able to buy their way out but then again, the wealthy (at least those that are white) aren't likely to be disadvantaged by an American fascism, at least initially anyway. What a fucking potential nightmare this all is, incredible.

I blurted that comment out from a subjective viewpoint. If I lived there I'd just want to get out, even as a white boomer male. With that status, I'd probably be able to do it. I sometimes feel that sentiment here when people like Howard and Abbott get voted in, but it never comes to that. Instead I am drawn to the bush, I 'emigrate' from the people, but not the land.
