Probably should add to the timeline the negotiations with Saudi Arabia to normalise relations with Israel, as a condition for further military (defence deals) with the US, further isolating Iran's influence.

Then the October 7th attack (From Iran backed Hamas) that stopped the Saudi negotiations in its tracks.

Iran backed Hezbollah's continued rocket fire into northern Israel displacing 100s of thousands.

Before the first point..

Just to round out the story a bit. I do accept there is a Bibi narrative here (self protection) and the fact he is politically and possibly legally fucked post this war (we can only hope), but there is also a long running Iranian proxy war narrative.

Mainstream news is becoming less reliable, what with Al Jazeera being shut down in Israel just before the latest offensive in Rafah.

Not everyone in Israel is with Netanyahu, apparently.

Al Jazeera being shut down is a typical dick move by Netanyahu. But when I clicked on one of the posts from Alex it proved to be a misrepresentation. The biggest protests were a week before, and in this case mainstream news appears to have been more reliable.

Ta. Hence my "apparently".

I did find this on my Associated Press feed.
TEL AVIV, Israel – Thousands of Israelis rallied around the country Monday night calling for an immediate deal to release the hostages still held in the Gaza Strip.

The protests came as Israel’s war cabinet voted to begin an operation on the city of Rafah, saying that a ceasefire proposal Hamas accepted earlier in the night was not in line with Israeli demands.

In Tel Aviv, about 1,000 protesters swelled near Israel’s military headquarters, some blocking the city’s main highway until late into the night. Police tried to clear the road, lifting some protesters off the street and extinguishing fires lit during the demonstration. Other officers on horseback surrounded crowds who chanted “deal now!”

In Jerusalem, hundreds of protesters called for a hostage deal. They marched toward the home of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, holding a banner reading “the blood is on your hands.”

There were also smaller protests in the cities of Haifa, Beersheba and Raanana.

Israeli police did not immediately respond to a request about the number of people arrested.

In front of Netanyahu’s house stood Mai Albini Peri, the grandson of Haim Peri, a hostage in Gaza. He held a sign that read, “Rafah, not at the expense of my grandfather.”

I think I immediately imagined this sort of floodgate opening and a huge Ceacescu-style uprising against Netayahu starting up because everyone is just sick of the horror. Then I was disappointed to see it was much less than that. Serves me right for indulging in wishful thinking.

I find this weird, even from the AP news, so there was a deal signed by Israel and international negotiators, but then Hamas rejected/ignored that and signed a different deal, that no one even knows what is in it.

Now everyone is carrying on in the media how Hamas signed a ceasefire deal but Israel won't sign it?

Sounds all very dodgy to be frank

From that AP link Mr Black gave above.
A U.S. official said that Washington was still waiting to learn more about the Hamas position and whether it reflected an agreement to what had already been signed off on by Israel and international negotiators or to something else.

Details of the proposal haven’t been released. The official was speaking on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to publicly discuss the matter.
New york times outlines the timeline here

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/06/worl ... eline.html
Monday, April 29
Israeli officials, offering a hint of hope for a deal, said that their negotiators had reduced the number of hostages they wanted Hamas to release during the first phase of a truce.

Thursday, May 2
A Hamas leader said that the group would soon send a delegation to Cairo to “complete ongoing discussions” on a cease-fire deal.

Saturday, May 4
With talks underway, a senior Hamas official said in a text message that the group’s representatives had arrived in Cairo for the talks, “with great positivity” toward the latest proposal.

Sunday, May 5
The talks — which are held indirectly, through mediators — hit an impasse, and Hamas said its delegation had left Cairo. An Israeli official described the negotiations as in “crisis.”

Late in the day, Hamas launched rockets at a border crossing between Gaza and Israel, killing four Israeli soldiers. Israel stepped up its attacks in Gaza.

Monday, May 6
Hamas said it accepted the terms of a cease-fire — not as laid out in Israel’s proposal, but drawn from one put forth by Egypt and Qatar.

I just heard Aryeh Neier on the BBC. He is a Jew and a holocaust survivor and the co-founder of Human Rights Watch, and he says he now believes Israel's actions in Gaza can be called genocide. I was impressed by the clarity of his words, and the moral authority of his background.

I think what I struggle with is the hypocrisy

So there is a famine in Yemen at the moment, it has been ongoing since 2016, unicef and world food program are talking about 20 million people in famine and over 130 children per day dying of starvation for the last 8 years running, the worst famine in the world according to both groups. Meanwhile Saudi Arabia who are largely responsible in driving this famine and have been using US bombs to bomb cities in Yemen, completely destroying multiple hospitals, bombing fishing fleets so they can't get food, bombing farms and food related factories to stop food production. They aren't demanded to facilitate or supply aid, instead they have bombed the aid ports set up independently by the UN, yet not all over news every day, no large scale protests, no UN security council resolutions, no ICC case..

That is just one example, there are plenty more..

My problem is not that Israel shouldn't face the ICC, if they did wrong then 100% they should, as should the leadership of Hamas and Hezbollah, my real concern (and to some degree curiosity) is driven by how selective peoples outrage is. If we want to clean up war crimes and all the problems it drives, we can't do it selectively, so cool start with Israel if they want, but they can't stop there.
