A potential "Day Zero" in Sydney was one of the things that prompted me to leave the city. It would be a climate change nightmare unlike the predominantly regional disasters of flood and bushfire. I wonder what the stats are on water tank installation compared to rooftop solar.

I slid my new tank into place, drilled out the opening and attached the tap. I transferred a bit of water from the existing tank to test it out. So far so watertight. Then I went to Bunnings to get an adapter so I can attach a garden hose for non-apocalypse use, i.e watering the garden when there's no imminent bushfire threat or bad drought.

In the hose section I struck up a conversation with a woman of similar age to me and I mentioned climate change. She trotted out a well-rehearsed zombie claim that worsening bushfires are caused by arsonists and fuel load in national parks, not climate change. I was ready with some fact-checking retorts. Then I quickly changed the subject when she started a self-important lecture on how eucalyptus trees burn.

My conditional assessment is that she was an arrogant know-all, an entitled, politicised, blinkered, boomer dunderhead. An arsehole. I think I did pretty well to land my demonstrably evidence-based points more succinctly than usual, before firmly ending a pointless argument. Because even if I won the argument, she'd still be an arsehole. i don't think there's any debating victory which fixes that.

Anyway, the tank is in place, and I have 6,000 litres of water storage capacity. Extremely satisfying. Next I'll order a little Honda pump, firehose, and accessories.

The world is on track for a “hellish” 3C of global heating, the UN has warned before the crucial Cop28 climate summit that begins next week in the United Arab Emirates.

The report found that today’s carbon-cutting policies are so inadequate that 3C of heating would be reached this century.
Warming up for this year's edition of the Greenwashing world championship. My money is on the hosts taking out the crown.
The UN warned earlier in November that the world’s fossil fuel producers were planning expansions that would blow the planet’s carbon budget twice over, which experts called “insanity”. Another recent report found that the state oil company of the United Arab Emirates, whose CEO, Sultan Al Jaber, will preside over Cop28, has the largest net zero-busting expansion plans of any company in the world.

As can be seen, it's going to be very tough for rivals to beat the state owned UAE oil giant, with the biggest expansion plans in the world. The hosts are well positioned to advance greenwashing to levels never previously seen. But don't write off Australias gas produces. Consistent performers on the domestic and global stage and with significant sponsorship deals in place from coalition backed cartels of experienced lobbyists, they'll relish the underdog status and you'd be a fool to write off this bunch of little aussie battlers.

The Saudis will of course play a major part but the field is weakened by Russia's probable absence. Nevertheless, expect some decent contributions from Petrobras, the majority state owned Brazilian oil miner that focuses on deep sea extraction and has plans for massive expansions over the next decade, they'll be a tricky opponent at this years event. And expect old timers like Chevron to put in a decent shift, along with the likes of Exxon and Shell who always present well.

Going to be a fascinating battle, the best we've ever seen, one suspects.

There's a subspecies doing fuckloads of harm. Cull?
Private jets belonging to 200 celebrities, CEOs, oligarchs and billionaires have spent a combined total of 11 years in the air since the start of 2022.

The carbon footprint of all those flights – a jaw-dropping 44,739 journeys – would be the equivalent of the total emissions of almost 40,000 Britons.

The Guardian used public data to track flights by private aircraft owned by celebrities and businesspeople including Elon Musk, the Rolling Stones, the Murdoch family and Kylie Jenner over 21 months.

The figures track the almost 300 jets belonging to those on the list and find that they emitted an estimated 415,518 tonnes of CO2.

Thomas Piketty has some ideas.

Regulations will be needed to outlaw goods and services that have unnecessarily high greenhouse gas emissions, such as private jets, outsized vehicles, and flights over short distances...
