Corolla Killer? would have made sense 5 years ago, now we need a Ford Ranger killer (being the no1 selling car in Australia)
At $US15,000, BYD’s new Qin EV is already being touted as a “Corolla killer”, as the world’s second largest EV maker continues to disrupt the global auto market.

Launched earlier this week in China, the all-electric Qin Plus has five variants priced between 109,800 RMB to ($A23,300) to 139,800 RMB ($A29,700).

The Qin Plus comes with a 100 kW motor and the option of either a 48 kWh battery providing 420 km CLTC range or a 57.6 kW hour battery with 510 km range.

Mobility consultant James Carter wrote on LinkedIn the new offering is the $15,000 car that incumbent OEMs (car makers) hoped would never come.

“The new BYD Qin Plus EV Honor Edition is the car that makes EVs way cheaper than ICE vehicles and blows open the mainstream market,” he wrote.

Indeed, most legacy car makers, at least those that are bothering to make EVs at scale at all, are still focused on the top end of the market, selling premium and heavy and high cost EVs, largely to protect their ICE business. In the US, the major car makers are retreating rapidly on their EV plans.
I like that it is only 100kw (Toyota Hybrid Corolla is 103kw), it means it will still have half decent performance but not sporty like so many other EVs. I think it looks ok too, conservative styling, for an EV.

New electric 4x4, no mention if price but I am imagining if the petrol version came with the BMW 6 cylinder at a price of $97,000 it isn't going to be cheap, but at least they're trying!

BYD has introduced an electric supercar to challenge Ferrari, it's called the....wait for it....."YangWang". Ok no it doesn't slip off the tongue like "Ferrari Portofino", in fact I'm not really sure where it slips and whether they consulted anyone outside China about the name, but well, it is unforgettable!

Spotty Yoof Happy Car.

I'd have one if I could fold up and bend to transition into the driver-seat position.

The BYD Seagull, AKA Dolphin Mini is looking like an EV equivalent of the cute little Daihatsu Mira I had in the 90s. Maybe available this year? Still >$30K.

I wonder if in an alternative universe, Nissan would have gone further than the Leaf and got serious about EVs like GWM did in China. Likewise with Toyota, the Prius was a big deal when it came out. Now they are lagging hopelessly. Also, as a pioneer of EVs, Nissan should be a pioneer in economical battery replacement, but they don't seem to be making much of an effort for their loyal Leaf owners. It's hard for a leopard to change its spots, they juts want everyone to buy a new car and crush the old ones for scrap. Climate schmimate.

Umm ok, this is weird.. Watching tv and saw advert for the Nissan xtrail e-power, I thought, ohh cool they went electric too, nope.. For about $10k more than my existing EV I can get an EV that doesn't need to be charged. Interesting selling point, the charge-less EV... Of course you need to get power somehow, so they added a 1.5lt turbo petrol engine to charge the 2.1kw battery that in turn drives the electric motor. They claim you get the "feeling of driving an EV without needing to charge it".

Turns out the RAV 4 hybrid is more efficient.

Is SpaceBratCo buggering up the EV market?
Everyone from business partners, market analysts and their own customer's fear Tesla is tanking the market for EVs.

Tesla's constant ratcheting of prices down to keep sales numbers up is having a sweeping effect on the EV industry. Owners are unhappy about rapid, market-leading depreciation. Business partners like Hertz felt they had to dump their Tesla fleet due to unfavorable resale values hurting their balance sheet. Competitors have had to lower prices, across the board, to keep up. This is exactly the opposite of Musk's statement from late 2023: "You can think of every car we sell or produce that has full autonomy capability as something that in the future may be worth five times what it is today."
