Having read this I can't agree more, any agreement with the Nats that kept them together would have been a disaster for the Libs.pipbarber wrote: ↑Tue May 20, 2025 6:43 pm It's a curious development. For the libs to form a majority government they'll need 76 - not including the certain 9 seats the nationals win every election. So that's not likely but they might win 67 seats, one day, and the 9 nationals will join them in a minority government.
It's actually a pretty smart move, in my opinion. The Liberal party can focus on winning back the cities and let the Nats spew their bullshit without the libs having to defend it. But the Nats will jump onboard a minority lib government in a heartbeat.
What labor and the greens need to do is focus on rural Australia. I don't how they'll do that successfully, but it ought to be something that is being discussed.
For instance:
He seems to think abandoning the net zero targets are a vote winner for some reason.Leadership challenger Matt Canavan has revealed this morning that the climate wars are a factor.
While the Nats may be getting seats now, I suspect every future election will push that number down as climate change becomes more evident.He’s suggested that his fight to dump net zero targets is one of the factors not listed on the Nationals list of demands that will be easier to pursue while the two parties “take a break”.
Nuclear Power, that's a dead issue, that's one of the reasons you lost, is he blind or an idiot? No-one except a tiny minority of Australians think nuclear power is a good idea!He is blaming a fight over the four policy issues including the future of nuclear power and supermarket divestitures.
I had to look up their policy on Supermarket Divestiture;
Look seriously, it may work like that in the country, but in fact we in fact have 2 IGA's in Exmouth, both owned by a local, he has a monopoly in town, there are no other supermarkets, the town is to small to support any more than the existing two, and in fact he is planning to expand one of the locations and close the other one. The towns to small to support multiple supermarkets from different companies, but lets face it, few independent grocers could afford one of the large city supermarkets run by Woolies and Coles, if sold off they would go to one of the large overseas chains trying to make their way into the country, or just close down. You stop this sort of behavior by regulation and monitoring and proper consequences for breaking the law.If Coles or Woolworths are found guilty of price gouging, exploiting suppliers, or anti-competitive behavior, they will be forced to sell off stores to independent grocers
You couldn't get an ironclad guarantee because what you wanted was for the Liberals to agree to everything you wanted, all the losing policies the Nat's support, you wanted them dialed in so the next election would go the way of the last, no wonder there was a split, it was basically blackmail, you agree to everything we want or we walk away, well look who fucking walked away! The Libs knew there was no hope if they agreed, so better to leave it, get on with what will work, and let the Nats come crawling in after the next election to try and form a coalition without having to agree to support all their crazy policies.“We could not get an iron-clad guarantee,” he said.
