Survivors have renewed calls for the former Australian governor general Peter Hollingworth’s lucrative pension to be stripped and redirected to survivors of abuse after two complaints of “serious neglect” related to his failure to act on knowledge of abuse were substantiated against him.

There is no suggestion Hollingworth abused children himself.

Hollingworth, who was Brisbane archbishop of the Anglican church before becoming Australia’s 23rd governor general, was recently the subject of an additional investigation by the Melbourne diocese, overseen by Victoria’s Commission for Children and Young People under its reportable conduct scheme.

The investigation considered seven complaints and found two to be substantiated.

The substantiated findings relate to his failure to act on knowledge of abuse, including his failure to remove bishop Donald Shearman after becoming aware of his abuse of children, documents show.

WA Police has confirmed child abuse squad detectives are in Broome as part of “an ongoing investigation into historic child sex offences”, with reports they are currently raiding the home of former Catholic Bishop Christopher Saunders.

Police are at a Piggott Way property in the Kimberley town, which until late last year was occupied by Saunders, the ABC has reported.

“A person is currently assisting us with our inquiries,” a police spokesperson said in a statement.

Christopher Saunders is believed to be in Perth as the second round of search warrants is executed.

It is understood he has not vacated the house, despite being ordered by the Vatican to leave the Kimberley region while both internal church and WA police investigations got underway.

In 2022, Pope Francis ordered a Vos Estis inquiry be undertaken into Bishop Saunders.

The resulting report, completed by two former police detectives, was leaked to the media, and catalogued allegations of bullying, financial mismanagement, and the grooming of young men.

A year on, the Vatican is still deciding what action to take.

In short: Tasmania's Anglican Church has been ordered to pay a victim-survivor of child sexual abuse almost $2.4 million in damages.

John Steen, now 53, was abused by paedophile priest Louis Victor Daniels in the 1980s – and despite his attempts to justice, he faced cover-ups, a confidential settlement and misrepresentations by the church.

What's next? Mr Steen said he was feeling "overwhelmed" after a 30-year fight for justice, while a victim-survivor advocate believes the judgement is a significant moment.

Some Broome details:

Details of charges against former Bishop of Broome Christopher Saunders can be revealed for the first time, after the retired cleric failed in his bid to prevent their publication.

Bishop Saunders was arrested at his home in Broome on February 21 and charged with 19 sexual offences.

At his first court appearance the following day, his lawyer Seamus Rafferty indicated 74-year-old would plead not guilty to all charges.

He also requested a suppression order restricting coverage of proceedings, telling the court that media coverage of the case had jeopardised his client's right to a fair trial.

Mr Rafferty also accused WA Police of leaking plans for Bishop Saunders' arrest to reporters from Channel 7, resulting in the process being filmed and broadcast in a way that he said breached his client's legal right to privacy.

South coast cult leader William 'Little Pebble' Kamm, partner charged with alleged historical child grooming

Religious cult leader William "Little Pebble" Kamm and his partner have been charged by New South Wales Police for alleged child grooming.

Police allege the pair groomed the child for more than a decade on the New South Wales South Coast.

Mr Kamm, 73, and a 58-year-old woman were arrested at a unit in Sydney's CBD on Monday.

A 19-year-old woman reported the abuse allegations to police in September last year.

Police will allege in court the woman told officers the grooming began when she was six.

Goodrich’s arrest in Virginia comes nearly eight years after he was arrested in Idaho on similar charges. Chelsea and her mother, Lorraine, went to Idaho police in 2016 to report wide-ranging allegations of abuse during her childhood.

Those charges were eventually dropped after a key witness in the case, another Mormon bishop to whom John had made a spiritual confession about him and his daughter, refused to testify. While the details of that confession have not been made public, the church excommunicated Goodrich.
