Violence

Post by stylofone »

Since I moved here a year ago I've heard and seen more violence or threats of violence (by adults) on my street than just about anywhere else I've lived. Various factors indicate I am living on struggle street, the proverbial wrong side of the tracks. Also I am in an elevated position and everything is more visible here. But I suspect violence is worsening on many levels in our society. It seems it's not just silly little Jordan Peterson who considers it an essential part of male discourse. I was also surprised to see a minor fracas in a women's rugby league match recently, and this article refers to girls resorting to violence too... although I hasten to add that male violence is the overwhelmingly predominant form.

But overall, it does seem to be getting worse. Suggestions that violent urges are a social construct, a social ill, or a personal failing which can and should be eliminated, don't seem to have a lot of traction.

So maybe it is just me. Thanks Loki for this very relevant observation ... although those school suspension figures seem extraordinary.

Also I was thinking about the context of what is frequently referred to as a crisis in domestic and gendered violence. Even if the data shows a fall, it can still be considered a crisis, because the violence of the past flourished in an atmosphere of normalised misogyny which is less acceptable by today's standards.
