Minor historical fact in bibble proves god is real?

Post by stevebrooks »

A breakthrough archeological discovery in ancient Jerusalem is proof that a bible story is real, according to experts.
Well no, it just shows that historical facts included as part of a fantasy story has no bearing on the actual contents of the story, although I am betting that believers will jump on this as proof that god is real. Just like the actual existence of Troy proves that Achilles was real and had magic powers that protected him from injury...and all the other magical stuff in the stories of the time.

In order to separate the carbon-14 from other organic material, each was cleansed, turned into graphite, and then placed into a particle accelerator that operated at 3,000 km/s.

It's funny how religious groups will use scientific methods like carbon dating to prove the bibble true when the dates agree with what they want, but deny the validity when the dates don't agree with what they want;
And new carbon-dating techniques have pushed back the boundaries of the technology, enabling Tel Aviv University, the Israel Antiquities Authority, and the Weizmann Institute of Science to pinpoint dates older than ever before.
That's all fine, until the dates suddenly start indicating dates before god created the world, then religious groups everywhere claim carbon dating is unreliable, oh well;

And here we go again, ancient stone tablets prove that angel wiped out soldiers, oh dear, my Harry Potter book proves that broomsticks fly, fancy that!
A recent discovery in Israel may corroborate an epic biblical account of an angel of the Lord wiping out 185,000 Assyrian soldiers, an independent scholar claims.

Stephen Compton, an independent scholar specialising in Near Eastern archaeology, used a modern mapping technique to find the discovery of, what he believes, are ancient Assyrian military camps, from circa 700BC.

The discovery, which is also detailed in Assyrian texts, Greek histories and the Hebrew Bible, could verify the biblical account of 2 Kings 19:35, Isaiah 37: 36-38 and 2 Chronicles, 32:21.

“And it came to pass that night, that the angel of the Lord went out and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred fourscore and five thousand; and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.” — 2 Kings 19:35

The scholar detailed his finds in the journal Near Eastern Archaeology and shared with Fox News Digital the historical significance.
It's a story people, it may have some basis in fact, that some sort of epic disaster happened, maybe a sudden outbreak of the plague or some other natural event, but it wasn't fucking angels because angels don't exist!

In fact the very wording used in the scripture clearly indicates purely human origin and invention;

and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses

When they arose they were all dead corpses? What sort of wording is that? Corpses are by definition dead!

It looks to me like this sort of biblical "scholarship" has been around for decades. It's a load of crap and always has been. Maybe it started out as well-meaning. What's changed is the way the Murdoch press and others amplify the supernatural aspect of it, with the angel of the lord and all that crap. There seems to have been a rupture in the wall of separation dividing fuzzy religious fantasy, and the real world of newspapers and politics. Now the right-wing press emphasise the magical side of things in a way that would make the original authors blush... until they realise they can make a bit of coin from their new found fame, so they abandon their century old pretensions of being "scholars" and go all-in with the MAGA religious nutters.
I can feel it

What is remarkable is how finding some ancient historical fact from biblical history suddenly proves angels exist, but the finding of Troy didn't prove Achilles was invulnerable to everything except an arrow to the heel, strange indeed!

Wow. Groups of people camped somewhere in the fertile crescent therefore huge slaughter.

Such evidence. Much logic.

Noone has ever inflated a casualty number to make themselves look better. Nosiree, all mythological deaths are ridgy didge, all vikings spent their entire lives raiding and slaughtering, the Egyptians totally slaughtered all the first born in a single night and the Toltecs had entire buildings made from gold and jewels.

Apparently 700 000 died at the battle of Changping, and there are actual bodies to support that. These mythologists are amateurs.

I believe they kind of walked around with their elbows bent at right angles, so I wouldn't put it past them.
