Well that's spicy! 52.9? How is that even survivable without air-con? And then chuck in water shortages?

At the bottom of linked report is:
At the SMS hospital in Rajasthan’s capital, Jaipur, so many bodies of casualties of the heat have arrived at the mortuary that its capacity has been exceeded. Police in the city say many of the victims are poor labourers, who have no choice but to work outside, and homeless people.

A lot of it depends on humidity, high humidity and you are in real trouble because with a breeze and low humidity the body can shed excess temperature through sweating and evaporation, but of course this is India and high humidity is probably a given in many areas.

Incidentally, climate change may reduce unnecessary air travel.
Singapore Airlines made international news earlier this month when severe turbulence left one person dead and more than 30 injured. Then, just a few days later, a flight attendant broke her back during severe turbulence on a Turkish Airlines flight.

Several other incidents of severe turbulence in the news this weeks suggests that maybe turbulence really has gotten worse. Then again, we’re also living at a time where the airline industry is under a lot more scrutiny, so it’s also possible we’re just hearing about it more because people are already paying attention. A review of recent research, though, shows that’s not the case.

For example, there’s a 2023 paper by University of Reading researcher Mark C. Prosser studied trends in clear-air turbulence, a type of turbulence that occurs without clouds or thunderstorms present, and the results don’t paint a pretty picture. While light-or-greater CAT only increased 17 percent over the North Atlantic between 1979 and 2020, moderate-or-greater CAT increased by 37 percent, and severe-or-greater CAT jumped a whopping 55 percent. So it’s not just that turbulence is happening more frequently. We’re also seeing more severe turbulence.

There’s also a 2017 paper from Dr. Paul D. Williams, a professor of atmospheric science at the University of Reading in the UK who also co-authored the previous study. The paper used a computer model to estimate how much worse turbulence will get when carbon dioxide in the atmosphere doubles. According to the study, we can expect light, moderate and severe turbulence to increase 59, 94 and 149 percent respectively. So expect bad turbulence to only get worse going forward. Those findings are also backed up by another 2023 paper authored by Seoul National University’s Dr. Soo-Hyun Kim, which found that we can expect climate change to make all types of turbulence worse, not just clear-air turbulence.

The second story on ABC 7pm news in NSW was about the construction schedule for new road links to Sydney's second international airport, due to open in two years. It took decades to decide on a location for the airport. It gives me a feeling of living in the future now that it is imminent. It's also very weird because they should be reducing flights at the first one, not opening a second one. It's another example of efforts to reduce emissions being canceled out by actions which increase them. (I couldn't find an online version of the story, which was built around interviews with State and local politicians today).

The first story was about the house which blew up a couple of days ago. It seems extraordinary that a gas leak could cause such a huge explosion. I already hated gas before this. It was a "social housing" medium density residence where it happened, so I presume the government had a pretty big hand in the infrastructure.

Apparently the world produces more than enough power. Issue is the inefficiency of using fossil based appliances/machinery. Hence the rush to electrification of everything.

Spiral out ....

Dutton's at it again, apparently he thinks there are enough global warming skeptic/deniers to get him elected;
Peter Dutton’s vow to axe Australia’s 2030 climate emissions target has been attacked, with a senior government minister warning the Opposition Leader was a ‘real risk’.

Mr Dutton said he would scrap Labor’s legislated target for 43 per cent emissions reduction by 2030 at the federal election due by May next year and focus on nuclear energy to reach net zero by 2050.

The decision would place Australia at odds with its legal commitments under the 2015 Paris Agreement where nearly 200 countries committed to their own plans to reduce planet-warming emissions.
He is going to focus on nuclear energy, oh dear me, got news for him, nuclear energy won't power ICE cars, the point of the targets is to gradually remove our reliance on fossil fuels, but unless you remove the fossil fuel industries and reliance you aren't going to get to net zero ever, and a major part of the current emission plans is to remove ICE vehicles and replace them with electric, and removing emission targets will just slow that down as motor manufacturing countries around the world dump their ICE dinosaurs on our doorstep!
He reiterated the Coalition’s proposal to replace existing coal-fired power generators with a mix of small and large-scale nuclear reactors to use for net-zero power sources, however, did not reveal the proposed locations.

Speaking on Sunday, opposition communications spokesman David Coleman said the party would reveal its alternative to the federal government’s 2030 climate target in due course.
They aren't releasing their plans because, essentially, there are no plans, it's all hype at the moment. For a start a political party can't just "announce" the location of a nuclear power plant, they can propose, but then comes the hard work, environmental studies, design and planning, how it's going to work with existing infrastructure, transport and disposal of waste, and most importantly public opinion, and I expect the last point is why they aren't saying anything at the moment. Announcing a location and getting a lot of backlash from the public, well that could certainly kill their election dreams. What a fool!

Indeed, and the waste storage will almost certainly be in a rural area, that is, a National party electorate. That might not go down all that well with NIMBY Nat voters, and actually, nor should it.

Appealing to the climate change denying population is a deeply stupid strategy, i'd have thought. I mean, undeniably there are a lot of them in Australia but they aren't really congregating in particular electorates, beside the National Party held seats. In the cities, they are clearly a noisy ignorant minority in every suburban electorate, it'll never be a seat winner. But Dutton hangs out with Gina and consumes Rupert bullshit and he's probably over estimating how many people share his bigoted under-educated echo chamber.

Hopefully he'll lose his seat next year, it's quite likely.

@dcjohnson The population of India is around 1.5 billion. India just hit 50C. Guess what will happen when much of India becomes uninhabitable.

And what will happen to all those "middle-class Americans" whos "savings" is mostly their home equity, when due to flooding, extreme weather, etc. they have to move, and their home is worthless because *everyone* in the area has to move out, for the same reasons?

Keep an eye on water status situations, like Port Lincoln.
