Elon Musk’s X is a thriving hub for Nazi support and propaganda, with paid subscribers sharing speeches by Adolf Hitler or content praising his genocidal regime.
NBC News found that at least 150 paid “Premium” subscriber X accounts and thousands of unpaid accounts have posted or amplified pro-Nazi content on X in recent months, often in apparent violation of X’s rules. The paid accounts posting the content all consistently posted antisemitic or pro-Nazi material. Examples included praise of Nazi soldiers, sharing of Nazi symbols and denials of the Holocaust.
The pro-Nazi content is not confined to the fringes of the platform. During one seven-day period in March, seven of the most widely shared pro-Nazi posts on X accrued 4.5 million views in total. One post with 1.9 million views promoted a false and long-debunked conspiracy theory that 6 million Jews did not die in the Holocaust. More than 5,300 verified and unverified accounts reshared that post, and other popular posts were reshared hundreds of times apiece.
Even before Musk made it into a Nazi bar, I hated the way journalists used it as a source of news. Any old bullshit trending on twitter was a news story in itself. The fact that they're still doing even now it is horrific, leading to Channel 7 reporting nazi lies as news this week.
I also have a vague hypothesis that there is a "twitter accent" where you speak in shorthand which your cheer squad/echo chamber will understand, presenting opinions as fact and ignoring the need to justify statements with evidence or good arguments. You are also more nasty than is normally acceptable, more likely to resort to ad hominem attacks. JK Rowling and Bettina Arndt have spoken with pronounced twitter accents recently. You see a lot of twitter accents on Mastodon too, unfortunately.
I have a dream that the Australian government will do the same to xitter as it did to the Pirate Bay and other torrent sites, i.e. effectively ban it. It could also move its public communications to its own mastodon instances or similar fediverse platforms, and encourage use of open protocols in the same way it supported adoption of the internet in the early days, in the national interest.
Apparently the Australian government is trying to kill free speech, says the man who routinely deletes user accounts that are critical of him. I'm glad the commercial broadcast news world here is turning against him. His malignant existence is finally being seen for what it is.
