Home Affairs secretary Mike Pezzullo has been fired after revelations he inappropriately attempted to influence decisions made by the former Coalition government.

Pezzullo stood aside in September after the Nine newspapers reported a cache of text messages, in which he suggested to a Liberal powerbroker that Peter Dutton be reappointed to his department and lobbied for tougher censoring of media reporting on national security laws.

In a statement on Monday, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese revealed Pezzullo had been sacked from his post after an inquiry found he had breached the Australian Public Service code.

Michael Pezzullo got his Order of Australia in 2020 “for distinguished service to public administration”. His breaches of the APS Code of Conduct are known to have been occurring as early as 2016. He should be stripped of his AO. #auspol
Indeed. Some gongs need to be rescinded, and his is definitely one.

The Colesworths of Oz politics are working to preserve their comfy duopoly.
...as Mike Seccombe reported in The Saturday Paper last month, there is a great deal of cynicism about what is going on here. Many suspect Labor and the Coalition are teaming up to implement reforms that advantage existing parties, neutralising their respective threats (Clive Palmer and the teals) in order to preserve the “duopoly”. The Labor-dominated electoral committee has now handed down its recommendations, meaning legislation won’t be far off. Is the government really going to do a “dirty deal” with the Coalition on this, compromising what the community wants in order to protect their declining primaries?

Unfortunately, it seems likely to happen, despite the desperate warnings of the crossbench.

The Govt & Coalition teamed up to defeat a motion I moved in the Senate today to release the report detailing how Mike Pezzullo breached the APS Code of Conduct.

The politicians Pezzullo was trying to influence don't want the report made public?

Perhaps things are a trifle unbalanced.

@MFWitches
Someone who stands on the Sydney Harbour Bridge or uses a kayak to temporarily block a coal ship to protest global boiling or who wears a Kaffiyeh in public to stand up for Palestine can get arrested and locked up in Australia now.

These guys?

No bloody worries.

Steve Davies, retired public servant, specialising in organisational change and people, development, looks at how stuff went rotten at the top end (Parliament and PubService management both).
In 2023 people are very attuned to the fact that all is not well with politics and government. The trouble is that the major parties are not really listening to them. Let alone acknowledging that the problem is them – behaviours and practice – and its systemic.

The persistent sentiments that runs through people’s disquiet is that politicians and government will never change, they are out of touch, they don’t care about people, and they don’t listen. Numerous real-life examples have created and reinforced that sentiment.

These sentiments have not changed with the election of the Albanese Government. If anything those sentiments are stronger than ever. Hence, for example, the rise and rise of the Teal independents.

It may be argued that the Albanese Government inherited the situations that have given rise to these sentiments. While there is no doubt that the extremes of the Morrison Government (along with those of previous LNP Governments), plunged the decline in behaviours and practices to new depths that does not absolve the Albanese Government of responsibility.

Why do I say that? Because … As I pointed out in the handbook:
“Tragically, within the Australian Government the moral compasses of public servants and politicians have been switched off and, indeed, are expected to be switched off. As a result, great harm is done to people, society and the land we live on. To all of our institutions and democracy itself.

Here we are in 2023 and, even with the election of the Albanese Government, we see a government that is fearful of dealing with the fact that moral disengagement has been normalised in government and, to varying degrees, all of our institutions.”

The fact that Labor are going after people with a disability to save cash, rather than the $350b+ of tax breaks for the rich, or the $450b+ for out-of-date submarines from the US, says all you need about Shorten, Albanese, and the whole Labor party; their supporters included #Insiders
I guess you could say it's sub-standard conduct.
