There used to be a triumphalist facechook group called "Tony Abbot will never be Prime Minister", and it didn't turn out well. Now I contemplate a similar scenario with the supposedly "unelectable" Dutton, except that it feels like the world is in a much worse place, with Trump threatening to kill his political opponents, and the UK not far behind in craziness. Here the opposition is reveling in crude sabotage, dog-whistling, misinformation and culture war. In the end it will destroy them too just as it has their counterparts in the US and the UK, but right now it is a short term strategy that they can't resist. The Australian public is, unfortunately, proving itself to be highly susceptible to this kind of sugar substitute. Don't say it couldn't happen here. It already did, with Scummo and the Mad Monk.

By the time of our next election Trump will have presided over total chaos for 5-6 months, or been instrumental in Jan 6 style uprisings. The Torries don't seem to have the capacity to produce anything but chaos and cruelty so we can expect another 12 months of that from them. All of which makes it hard for Dutton. However, you can't write him off. Recourse to authoritarian style politics in times of social and economic crisis seems like some kind of perverted cultural reflex, and given the dire outlook of the near future Dutton does stand a realistic chance. My hope is that the torries and trump will be proof enough that populism will be bad for 'straya. But who knows. 18 months is a long time, for now i'm just happy he is in opposition.

Home Affairs secretary Mike Pezzullo has been fired after revelations he inappropriately attempted to influence decisions made by the former Coalition government.

Pezzullo stood aside in September after the Nine newspapers reported a cache of text messages, in which he suggested to a Liberal powerbroker that Peter Dutton be reappointed to his department and lobbied for tougher censoring of media reporting on national security laws.

In a statement on Monday, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese revealed Pezzullo had been sacked from his post after an inquiry found he had breached the Australian Public Service code.

The inquiry found he used his position for personal advantage, gossiped disrespectfully about ministers, broke confidentiality, failed to act apolitically, and didn’t disclose a conflict of interest.

In September, Nine Entertainment revealed a trove of texts Pezzullo sent to a Liberal insider, Scott Briggs, who was close to prime ministers Scott Morrison and Malcolm Turnbull. In the texts Pezzullo inserted himself into the political process, lobbying for his bureaucratic interests and his views.

A long-time public servant who served both sides of politics, Pezzullo also worked in the office of Kim Beazley when he was opposition leader.

A hawk on China policy and hard-line on national security issues, especially border protection, Pezzullo was a divisive figure in the bureaucracy.

While he was known for always being willing to express his views forthrightly, current and former senior colleagues were amazed at the overreach his texts represented, including his criticism of a then minister, Marise Payne, and of Julie Bishop when she put up her hand for leadership in 2018.

As soon as the texts were revealed, it was generally recognised in government and public service circles that Pezzullo would not survive.

And just last Friday, the Remuneration Tribunal rules changed so Dept Secs dismissed for misconduct don't get payouts. Awww.
