Re: Kamala Harris
I didn't watch it but i've read a few reports and seen some clips. The most important thing was that it wasn't a total fucking train wreck, like Biden's effort. So long as she didn't completely fuck up, which she clearly didn't, then Trump looks idiotic. Maybe if there really are any undecided ...

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/article/2024/sep/09/trump-presidency-day-one-project-2024 Next come the roundups. As drafted by the Maga nativist-in-chief Stephen Miller, a broad range of law enforcement, from the national guard to state and local police are deputized for a new deportation ...

Re: USA Gun Deaths
It's got me curious about how much an AR-15 costs. I looked at a couple of US websites, which were disturbing on their own, and it seems the top shelf is around $2500 but a good second hand one can be got for $400. Bullets, or ammo, from $7-$20 for 20 'rounds,' which presumably means bullets. What a ...

Re: USA Far Right Watch
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/article/2024/sep/03/trump-maga-allies-election-conspiracy-theories It feels like the US is trapped in a catch-22 scenario. Policies that might take the heat out of emergent fascism, such as free public healthcare, open access and free higher education, increasing ...

Re: Donald Trump
I find Australia is about 5 to 10 years behind the USA as well. The only thing saving us is compulsory voting and lower religious influence. I'm amazed more people can't see the similarities with 1920's Germany. I reckon preferential voting is hugely significant too. Less religious influence ...

https://www.readings.com.au/product/9781760645311/repeat--dennis-glover--2024--9781760645311 I read this book last night (only 140 pages, a long essay really). The basic thesis is that the parallels between the 1920s and 30s and the last two decades are impossible to ignore. Nothing that hasn't ...

Re: Climate Change
At this point, denying the fact of climate change is a gigantic Kierkegaardian leap of faith, completely removed from the reality of organic worldliness. I mean, if you happened to live in Melbourne right now, all you really have to do is walk outside. Still, probably not real if someone on youtube ...

She was misgendered in that 'whatsnew...' article, which annoyed me. But what a letter. I loved the tone, beautifully measured.

Re: Vehicle Size Creep
That reminds me, i was in Broken Hill recently and sitting on the balcony of the Palace hotel enjoying a beer. Just watching the street and the traffic and suddenly i realized that there seemed to be fewer large 4WDs by proportion of cars than your average inner city Melbourne suburb! So you can ...
